For fame and fortune.
Kinesos started out his life as the heir to his Greek family's fortune, the only problem was that his overbearing parents were still alive. So Kinesos ordered a hit on them.
The hit went awry and Kinesos found himself caught in the crossfire, the stress from the event triggered his mutant ability to absorb (and rechannel) kinetic energy.

Kenji Acoma, the man who would become Steel FX. Was a scout for the Great Khan, traveling the steeps of Asia. He was searching for the next conquest for his noble lord. Coming across a dazzling light in the middle of nowhere, the fearless scout promptly investigated, sending his companion back to report on his discovery.
Slowly approaching the light, Kenji saw armored beings coming out of the light.
