LOTRO Free to Play Trailer
September 7, 2010 - 4:34pm
Check out the newest LotRO trailer!
Some of that is cut scene but it should be clear what part is gameplay. And yes, the game really is that pretty.
Remember, they're going free to play on Friday and you have a couple of guides ready to help you get your feet wet.
Just send me message and we'll figure out a time to meet up on the Nimrodel server.

Per, my Hunters name is Griffderrick and the Wardens name is Griffondel. I know you appreciate the connection to my User name.
I have a title for the Hunter, but not for the Warden, yet. I am finding no problem with the Warden attacks. You just have to watch your attack pattern. The hunter seems easier to run, but I often find myself resorting to melee to finish the battle. This is a bit concerning, because I'm sure later on it will not be as easy to defeat the enemies. Haven't got to the point to appreciate the different boosts you get from the draughts, etc. I'm sure that will be appreciated later, as well. All in all, having a blast solo, but would like to do some team events with Vent to get some questions answered.

Would you guys be open to a Friday or Sat. night run? I could even do a Monday night, but it limits the time. I know Ember was talking about a Friday for the Task force this week, so it may needs be Sat. if most of us can make it. Let me know what would work for you guys and I'll post the event.

No worries Griff, the third part of the TF is set for two weeks away and is a one time deal
Have fun with LotR, guys! Wish I could join you but it's not Mac friendly as far as I could tell.

To avoid being a party pooper (too late), I'll just say this: I'm getting burned out on Fantasy games something fierce, to the point where I don't think I could play them even for free, and it's not just MMOs, but Fantasy games in general. Unless they do something beyond standard Fantasy tropes and Tolkein reruns (or in this case Tolkein originals), then I just can't bring myself to try them out. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura was an interesting take on High Fantasy, but practically everything else in the genre is still just "fantasy."
I don't want to say anything bad about LOTRO itself, since the game could dispense solid gold bars and I still wouldn't be excited about it, meaning any judgement I could try to levy would be hugely biassed. But it's about as High Fantasy as High Fantasy gets, and that's just... Ugh!

For me it's more like coffee, though. I may try other drinks from time to time, but I always end up at coffee... same for me and Tolkien. I don't forsee myself getting sick of it, even if I do try something else for a while from time to time.
This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend of mine recently. I've been trying to get him into City of Heroes for years, and even shared my one-time buddy code with him, but it never seems to take with the guy. Originally his complaint (which I probably misunderstood) was that he liked "that" in World of Warcraft, which he described as loot grind and raid grind. I figured that since City of Heroes now has that, it was as good a time as any to bring the question up again, but to my surprise, his actual argument appears to be that he simply likes fantasy and doesn't enjoy the more contemporary, more sci-fi theme of City of Heroes.
At this point, I realise it's probably a lost cause to try and recruit this friend of mine, but it just demonstrates the point where tastes diverge. To be perfectly honest, I've never been a fan of Fantasy, not even when I was a kid. I used to tolerate it with games like Diablo, Dungeon Siege and Revenant, but I've never actually seen the theme of one of those games and had THAT sell it to me. Maybe it's because I grew up with shows like the Swat Kats, the Centurions, the 90s Fox X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons, the Thunderbirds 2086 anime and so forth, or maybe it's because my parents exposed me to movies like Aliens, Star Wars, the Running Man, Total Recall and the like when I was a kid, but I've always had a soft spot for "out there" sci fi and not much else. Hell, I even followed some of Star Trek: The Next Generation on TV when I was, like, 12. And it's been really disappointing to me that "space" movies just aren't made any more. About the closest we have that's even REMOTELY recent are the Event Horizon and Supernova movies, neither of which is all that great.
We don't even have games like these. Homeworld as AGES ago, and Masters of Orion was ages before even that. I haven't seen a decent Wing Commander or Descent Freespace game in years and years. Or, for that matter, a Descent-style game, the latest being Descent 3, which is probably contemporary to the original Half-Life. Dead Space is actually pretty decent, as far as "space sci-fi" goes, but that's still just one contemporary game.
When it comes to MMOs, though, or even just basic RPGs, it's all Fantasy all the time. I have SOME degree of hope for the Warhammer 40 000 MMO, at least in terms of thematic, but I've seen gameplay from it and it more resembles WoW in space. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings is indeed classic, and probably one of the greatest works of literature and fictional universe. But it's like being told pie is the greatest foodstuff in the world, when I'd honestly really have cake, instead. In the spirit of Seinfeld is unfunny (read: it's probably not, but may seem so to people who've never seen it), I blame contemporary fiction's oversaturation with Fantasy for my extreme dislike of Tolkein's work. I really can't criticise it, it's just that I want something else by this point. And there really aren't all that many MMOs that offer that.
It's getting to the point where I feel like game designers can't design RPGs unless they involve swords, axes and bows in some fashion.

Which book did you get? There are at least three major books to that story....and tons of side stories as well.

Busted! Lol, no I haven't checked out the podcast yet...
I got the full series of LotR- all 3 volumes in one GIANT book with REALLY tiny print. It should be a fun read
I guess I should have gotten The Hobbit first but I just finished watching the LotR movies again and got an urge. I'll have to check out the others you mentioned too. I've never read anything by Tolkien so I'm hoping that it's not too much all at once.

Tolkien narrative is too slow and he like to flourish too much over some minor details.
But it is an awesome read. I read them betwen The Fellowship and Two Towers movies and i must say The movies are very well adapted and some details were changed so the story climax on the right time for the movies and some things were left off, like Tom Bombadil (thanx God!!!)

This in general is my problem with much of the most famous literary works that I've been exposed to. I've been called impatient before, but the older I get, the less of a stomach I have for stories faffing about with what I consider utter trivial. Tolkein appears to be most praised for being the first to create an entire fictional universe with story, lore, languages, details, descriptions and everything in-between. We've seen quite a few "expanded universe" constructs written since his time, and I can saw without a shadow of a doubt that I do not care one smidgen about any of them.
Again - that's not to slam the guy or his work. Even I'm not dumb enough to discredit years of critical acclaim and legions of supporters. But it ain't for me. Maybe I'm dumber, maybe I'm simpler, maybe I'm just impatient, but I simply don't care for precise details much of the time.
For instance, take the movie Armageddon. Everyone who's seen it - including people who like it - will admit that it's stupid, it makes no sense, the science is soft enough to spread on sandwiches and the acting is Shatner hammy. But I LOVE this movie for the amazing pace that it has, with literally not a moment when something truly interesting isn't happening. Even when nothing is happening... Things are still happening! Things I feel I should care about. Most other movies have long stretches of time when I'll start to drift off, strike up a conversation with the other people watching or yell at the screen that I get it, get on with it please. Not that movie. I barely get a spare second to think about how stupid it is

JTF 7 , here to stay
On a Tech note, I did get map-served once last night and had a wierd problem with the first Hunter I rolled, an Elf. Somehow I was booted from the tutorial way early and was in the campaign with a lvl 1 toon. Not a fun experience. Anyhow, started again with the Human and had no problems to this point.
I think I will reroll the Elf for a different AT, perhaps a Warden or Champion. Opinions?
