Fleet Night: The Big Dig
Submitted by Peregrin on April 8, 2010 - 6:59am
We had:
CT
Per
Dman/Chargex
Pandaren/BlueInsector
Syl
CT suggested we try a Fleet Action, which in some ways is kind of like a Task Force in CoH, but multiple teams are able to join the same instance. Up to 20 people can be in the same Fleet action.
In this case we went for 'The Big Dig' and without much in the way of spoilers I'll try to comment.
We started with a team of 4 but Syl joined late and couldn't get into the instance... might have been the level of the character though. There was another team in the instance with us, but I don't think either was full, so we were taking on a 20 person instance with only probably 8.
Some things I learned:
- Know your missions objectives. If there's a guide read it, even if it spoils some of the story's surprise.
- You should pay attention to mission objectives instead of just trying to kill every mob that's in front of you. That would work in most CoH instances, but here they just keep spawning... and spawning.... and spawning... and ambushing... and spawning.
- You should stay with the group. Facing the size of the spawns we had while trying to meet back up with your team spells DEATH!... many many times.
- Watch your back. Some STO mobs will intentionally try to engage in melee while some try to flank you and others keep their original position. Several times I thought we were doing ok when I realized there was another group killing us from behind. I don't know if they were another group we (most likely I) aggro'd or if they were an ambush.
- If there's another team in the instance, stick with them! There really is safety in numbers.
In short, we got slaughtered over and over again. After 3 hours some of us had to log so the team quickly fell apart after 11 EST. However, it seems to me that a couple of teams who communicate and know the mission objectives could easily complete this in under 2 hours.
Although there were some frustrating times, I logged off thinking "Man that was fun." Which frankly surprised me. I'm usually a little more goal oriented, so not finishing something like this should irritate me. Instead I left feeling like we need to organize a decent set of teams to tackle this again!
Thanks for the fun evening guys.

Sorry I missed it last night, all. I ended up working way past the start time for Fleet Night. Glad to see you all ran an event though

I tend to be able to get on after 8PM EST. My toon's name is now Bernard D'Oeuf since his head looks like a purple egg. uhm... I'm not in the fleet yet, afaik. I have run a couple of fleet op type things, and it is ridiculously important to stay with the group even if you're not on a team.

A lot of the score is based on kills and damage dealt. So since we were there for almost the entire action we placed higher. Those scores are only for our instance. And there were some times where I saw 12-15 players on the map. But for that last objective it got really tough. Dawn and I were able to duo the Reman captains eventually and that's how we ended up completing the Fleet Action.

I came in 6th!? I was 9 levels below the enemies and spent most of my time on the ground. Guess my seeker drones did most of the work
On another note, I have done this instance in 1.5 hours with a group of 15-20 people. So it is a long instance...

Man, I wish I could have been there. I was working, but on a good note next week is day shift, sooo I should be there for fleet night.
My main is LC2 with a really cool T2 science vessal. I really like it for combat, it seems to be a good cross for strength and manueverability. I went on a fleet action in Pi Canaris (I think that was the name of the sector), you are right about getting away from the group, I spent a lot of time respawning...... and trying to catch up with the group.

I'm not so sure I didn't have a problem on my side. I tried joining the Crystalline Entity, and I wasn't able to do that either. . . I know previously I've been able to join that fleet action

Missed you, Pax.
You and a bunch of other SG members that I know bought the game but I never see in game....
You and a bunch of other SG members that I know bought the game but I never see in game....
I know I am one of those
I did buy the game, and it did arrive, but I was waiting until I actually had time to play before starting; then I had a friend move here from out of state, and now my computer's battery is dead.
On a brighter note, I should be able to join you fairly soon. I am just not going to promise any particular date, since if I do that, it tends to birth a conspiracy to make it impossible for me to do so.

I'm starting to get the hang of making SP. Went from LC6 to LC9 in pretty short order last night, even with wasting like 45 minutes on a CE where everyone in there was a retard.

I wasn't on last night as I was sick (still am) with a bad cold. Went to bed early. Will try to be on next week with my low-end toon to help the lowbies.

Yep, a lvl 1 and a lvl 9 are practically the same, except for a few inherent abilities, I've found, whereas in CoH, a lvl 1 would get destroyed in a lvl 9 mission before auto-sk.

OMG my inventory is full of LV III, and IV stuff. I need to run to the fleet bank and drop some off. I will most likely be working, I need to roll another lowbie to run this stuff with you guys.
