Jags may be Adversity's best tank
March 15, 2010 - 9:53pm
Jags is an awesome tank. He knows how to group the bad guys, he pays attention to the squishies, and he moves from group to group with a sense of urgency. No offense to the newer tanks in the group but its a damn pleasure to see someone who knows the ropes.
Thanks again, fellers. When the Goddess is happy, I'm happy.

That's very nice of you to say, though I think we'd have had the same (or even better) luck if Hexen had grabbed Gorilla Jack and I'd stayed on a scrapper. He's an outstanding tank. We had an invuln tank, kin defender, great AoE scrapper, and great burst dmg scrapper. That's just a really good combo and as players none of us sucked.
Quick tips if anyone's having trouble with their tank...
* You don't need to pull very often. CoX spawns are grouped well to begin with and are easily controlled by a tank using a single AoE attack and their ranged Taunt on the outer edge. Only pull those problematic rooms where one spawn can easily roll into another. Pulling single or multiple spawns is slower and tends to frustrate certain teams.
* Don't move too fast. Doesn't matter how good you are or how much damage you can take -- you should only be moving as fast as your team can efficiently kill stuff. If you're low on DMG, you need to slow your roll.
* Don't be too defensive. Don't treat your teammates as though they'd be dead in 2 seconds without your studly heroics. If you're on a good team that has adequate DMG, you don't even need to stay to finish spawns off. Your team can handle themselves. In this case, it's just on you to get a spawn's attention, soak up the alphas, maybe deal with a problem mob or two, then go tie up the next spawn.
* No one really gives a shit about your damage. Your damage sucks. You are a rodeo clown. It's your job to get the bull's attention so the real stars can do the real work. Scrappers and Blasters laugh at your meager damage. Controllers roll their eyes at your ghetto control. Defenders are too busy buffing/healing/debuffing to make you look a lot tougher than you actually are. So shut up, strap on the clown shoes, and go get your ass kicked.
That's all you're good for...

Great advice for us newbie rodeo clowns, Jags!
I'm a little hyper about protecting my squishies. I don't have the rhythm down yet to know when they can handle themselves and I can move on to the next group, so these are great things to keep in mind.
Of course, you also have to figure out as quickly as possible just how competant your team is.....

One of my favorite COH toons is my Stone/Ice tanker!
Unfortunately - since I play so infrequently I don't like to tank - it takes a while to get back in the groove and I hate to be the cause of wipes.

Hooray Rodeo Clowns!
Seriously, that was some fast-ass exp last night. We only played for a little over an hour, four of us on an 8 spawn setting, and I went from 2 bricks into 49 to 1 1/2 bricks to 50. LOVE IT!

Very nice, thanks for the good advice. I, for one, am new to serious tanking, and I find this sort of advice to be invaluable.
I have a question that you might be able to answer. How long is that AoE gonna hold the spawns attention? How about my PBAoE toggle, Blazing Aura? I find it hard to believe that its low dps can hold the spawn while they are being hit with real dmg.
Thanks again!

I'm crushed that I didn't even get an honorable mention on my tank Pax
Seriously though, having teamed with Jags's tank, Hexen's Gorilla Jack, and many of Gophers tanks, those three have tanking down to a science, and should be a model for other tanks in the game to follow

I just barely rolled my first Tank about a week ago. I seriously suck, but will take any advice. I appreciate the tips.

Take all the powers in your secondary (except taunt, that power is absolutely worthless).
Make sure you take the Fly power pool for your travel power (Kiting enemies is awesome).
Avoid as many powers as you can in your primary (especially self-heals and shields). We're made to do damage. If you're a Fire tank make sure you get Rise of the Phoenix (self-heals are useless, but self-rezzes?!?!?!!!)
Get the Leadership power pool. (Remember you're a tanker, you're supposed to help your teammates!)
Also, make sure brawl is in your first power tray and six slot it (Best power ever).
Don't forget to try and get jump kick and punch from the Leaping and Fighting power pools (They'll help round out your attack chain).
Hope you find this advice useful! It helped me get my tanker to 50 in no time!

The tanker's inherent power causes them to generate more aggro than normal, so they can do less damage overall but still pull higher aggro then those around them. Relying solely on your auras can cause problems potentially, so you should definitely use all the tools in your arsenal to maintain aggro.

Any damage you do is a good thing. Gauntlet, your inherent power as a tank, causes additional threat to mobs around you as you fight. So you naturally attract opponents with every swing, kinda the same way Omni attracts flies.
Just be sure to slot your attacks for efficiency, not purely maximum damage. Nothing worse than a tank that's always out of endurance.

Again, all of your attacks cause additional threat on their own, Gauntlet passively enhances your threat level immensely, and throwing Taunt around when things get a little iffy should give you complete control of a spawn. So the mechanics of tanking in CoX are pretty easy.
And even when you do it all right, you'll still end up with bad teams that make it impossible. A good rule of thumb as you practice is that if you can keep Pax alive, you're doing a damn good job.

So Pax is like the Litmus test for tanking....?

I'm pretty much the litmus test for anything
Seriously, I've taken so much damage on my Forcefield /Energy Defender even poor Magia's namesake Empathy Defender couldn't always keep me alive, even when ONLY focusing on me
That's the primary reason my my original namesake was renamed Off-Road and Pax became the Willpower/Axe Tank you all know now, because if I was going to pretend to be a tank, I should probably roll a tank
Not so subtle hints from Gopher and others might have also prompted this change

I know a Tank who regularly used 'Self Destruct' from the Cyborg Pack and Rise of the Phoenix together!
