Now now, Gentlemen, play nice
Seriously though, given the model that Cryptic has been exploring lately, I am very glad/relieved to hear that this content will be a free, because honestly, I was a bit worried it would be a charged micro-expansion. I know that the STO devs have already promised more free content upcoming, and I'm glad to see them already delivering some
Can you expand a bit more about the MKX gear, CT?

So, STO came in the mail last night. Installed game, but my pathetic Laptop will not run it. I created character and got ready to run, but the screen locks up. My graphics or lack of one will not run it. Guess. it's time to get a new rig.....
PS my toons name is Griffon Da'Goth, pure alien type, kinda looks klingon. really cool if I do say so myself.

I know how you feel Gryph. My brand new laptop runs CoH just fine, but it won't run STO. Space isn't too bad, but ground combat is out of the question and load times for zoning (when I can actually zone) are really bad. If you are planning on running it on a laptop you better be prepared to buy one with an high end graphics card, which mean a gaming laptop, which means expensive.

Ah just one more way for Cryptic to screw it's customer base. Gotta love it.
Before anyone points out that I stated I wasn't going to post in these threads anymore. I changed my mind. My views are just as important as someone who thinks Cryptic is the bestest game designers around.
Cheers

Not sure why that would be Cryptic's fault FX. The fact of the matter is that there are alot of newer games that computers with chipset type graphics cards just aren't equipped to handle. I don't expect that I will be able to run CoH in ultra-mode either. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that Going Rogue will be OK on my laptop.
And I don't recall anyone saying that Cryptic was "the bestest". I have taken a wait and see attitude when dealing with them. I have been a Star Trek fan for a long time and I'm hoping that the game improves and continues to be fun.

I understand what you are saying OD. It just seems that most game designers and forcing the customer to purchase higher and higher graphics cards, to be able to play the game with decent visuals.
Granted they are taking better advantage of the capabilities of more advanced cards. I just disagree with them designing a game around the premiere cards. Not everyone can afford them. It used to be that games were built around the mid range of cards not any more.
The "bestest" comment was pure sarcasm. There are a lot of "cheerleader" types that really just get on my nerves.
I am also a Star Trek fan OD. Since TOS. I am really disappointed in Cryptic, with how they are just being money grabbing trolls when it comes to the "micro-transactions". Is it really necessary? Not in my opinion.
I really hope that STO gets better, and Cryptic pulls it's collective head out and stops trying the BS they have been.

I hear ya FX and I agree on alot of points.
Unfortunately, I think the micro-transactions are the way of the future for alot of online games. We are even seeing CoH doing it with their booster packs. Cryptic is doing it with playable races, which I like less than costume pieces, but I can live with. What pisses me off is the character slots. Three total slots and then you will have to buy more ... really? That seems cheap and is one of the things that really bugs me.
I agree with the graphics card issue too. My laptop is brand spankin new and it won't play STO. Now I didn't buy a "gaming" laptop with the express purpose of playing games, but I admit my heart sank a bit when I realized that STO just wasn't going to work on it. The problem is that the gaming customer is getting more and more demanding on how the game HAS to look in order for them to buy it and since they are the companies target audience, they are the ones they are designing the game for. Not the guys like you and me who are on a budget and game casually, but the hard core power gamer with money to spend. Personally, I'm really excited about Ultra-Mode in CoH. Not because I have a machine that will run it, but rather that it is available to the gamer that can enjoy it, while the casual guy like me can opt out of it and still play the game with a sub-par graphics card.

guys can i say the proverbial Frankie goes to Hollywood and Relax (yes im dating myself) and buy a laptop or desktop with better graphics when money is available. costs are REALLLY low recently. we gamers are made of sterner stuff than normal word processing and or casual web browsers. it is moores law and not game developers (cryptic, paragon, microsoft) and their standards that are costing us an initial chunk of coin. COH worked well with inferior hardware and development techniques for 5 years. in normal circles and dev cycles thats pretty damn good. what gaming companies DIDNT do was warn folks earlier that new releases of games would use higher end vid cards and framerates etc. there also is a groundswell of indy content that can in fact run on lower end graphic cards. whats latest and greatest in vid cards may in fact be common place and mid tier eventually when GR or STO episode 2 are released and more folks join game. would you take a moped to the daytona 500 and expect to win?
CT - dont mean to hijack your thread as this is not in anyway related to your post about Borg content. you are doing the members of Adversity a favor by posting anything related to STO so we are up to date. its time folks respect this fact and let you provide this valuable service. i will create a new thread if we end up needing to discuss the general new game hardware discussion and Cryptic micronomics.

Yeah, the bummer of the deal is... I already paid for 3 mos of gaming and the clock is ticking. Which means, I better buy a rig soon, or loose out on money spent, already. I knew that this day was coming, but was hoping to start STO now rather than when I get a new rig. Oh well, live and learn. I will be getting a new rig ASAP, when I return from Atlanta. I will see ya then....

There is an option under video to change the rendering to half resolution.
In some of the ground and space maps (especially where there's a lot of asteroids and other objects) I have to switch to half graphics. It runs a lot smoother. It might get you up and running until you do invest in a better rig, even though it looks like garbage. It doesn't change the resolution of the UI so it's a great feature for a game like this.
FX - I have been skeptical of Cryptic based on some of the things they did with CoH that got reversed under current management. However, this is a good game and they haven't charged me for anything that was necessary to play the game.
This quote about the previously planned paid expansion for Champions restores my faith that they are at least aware of their community:

I'd like to reassure everyone we consider Revelation to be of a quality and quantity that is very worthy of a price tag. It is still legitimate expansionary content, the same as it was designed to be. But our community means everything to us and we’re incredibly excited to be able to get this massive update out to you all.

Yeah, use the half-res option. I have an old laptop with a Celeron M and a X200 ATI chip and 2Gb of ram and it runs well at half-res and the UI at 1280x800. So try the half-res for now Griffon, it will at least get you started until the new rig is in your hands.

If it doesn't even let you get past the character selection screen you can back out to the login screen and on the lower right there's an options button that allows you to access the video options.

Thanks, will try out the half rez function. I was going to do that, but couldn't find the options tab.
