Horror Clowns: Trick or Clown
Submitted by Orion Pax on October 24, 2009 - 7:17pm
Not sure what to wear for the event? Oh, why that's so simple! Dress like a clown, and add just enough make-up to scare the living daylights of anyone we pass by. What's that...make-up not your thing? Well then, maybe you're one of the freaks that should join our Fear Fair! Are you monstrous, grotesque, deformed, ghoulish, vile, furry, covered in scales, or brimming with horns or fangs? Then you've come to the right place, we're just dying to have you!
No matter how you look, you can be sure the Horror Clowns and their Fear Fair will bring a smile to your face...as for the rest of the Rogue Isles...they might just die laughing!
Sign-Up using the Drop-Down below so you can officially reserve yourself a spot on the event team for up to 15 minutes after the event starts

Awwww, darn. Marqaha and I will be in downtown Philly, watching the Dead Milkmen weave their web of shouting, yelling, and punk music.
Have fun, and don't forget, Saturday is the night you "fall back" an hour (at least for some of us!)

Couldn't make it, dang.... Watching grandkids and taking them trick or treating was almost as much fun, though. Grandma and I had to fill in for mom and dad. Mom is prego's and Dad hurt his back. They were both laid up at our house while we had fun with the grandkids.... it was SWEEEET!

We were in Philly pretending we were young punks again with the Dead Milkmen. The concert was amazingly cool, and the persistent rain didn't "dampen" our fun
Now I'm tired and sore and I remember what being a young punkrock kid was about. Pass the aspirin!

LOL! No, Mis made it sound like being "in Philly" was a special treat!
And how can you not like Pearl Jam? That's so wrong....

Well, we don't LIVE in the city itself, so we go "to" the city for stuff...
But I hate Pearl Jam, and the Spectrum IS a shithole. Saw the Cure late last year there and that was enough for me.
The funny part is, one of our favorite bands, Bad Religion, opened up for PJ.....a missed opportunity to see them.
Think about this...those PJ tickets were probably upwards of $65 dollars. For TWO bands.
We saw the Dead Milkmen, and TWO other bands, for $18.50. ROCK!!

I read about Pearl Jam closing the Spectrum! I would have loved to have been there for that show!
Though I'm sure that the Spectrum isn't what it use to be, I have a lot of fond childhood memories of the place, I've seen countless show there, most of them I don't remember too well, but some that stand out where;
Yes - In the round
Foghat
Van Halen
Rush
Kansas
Queen
Kiss
Alice Cooper
Aerosmith
Steve Miller Band
Boston
Emerson, Lake, & Palmer
Foriegner
Styx
Ted Nugent
farewell shithole, i'll miss ya!

toon, that was almost like music, except maybe the part where the 14 yr old singing it couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. And if you are going to argue lyrics, PLEASE don't. My opinion of your musical tastes would suffer greatly. I thought that was a joke, not a real music video. In fact, that song(loosely translated) was like rap with no beat. I recognize that musical tastes differ greatly, but don't argue that was anything more than a bunch of kids jamming. Their music, if that was an example, like their name is lame.....

Your phrase "kids jamming" resonates with me.
As a former professional musician I can state from experience that those early days spent fumbling with a barely understood instrument, searching for your own unique voice, are far more important than most people realize. Those kids are driven by a passion for making noise and they don't suffer from distractions related to music industry marketing and the cultivation of mass-marketable image.
I'd liken it to watching your grade school aged child developing social skills, establishing conflict resolution priorities, and otherwise discovering society's social expectations by fumbling through early playground games. Proper socialization is critical to lifelong success, but your child couldn't care less. All he or she knows is that its fun to feel the sun and your face, to run around like an idiot, and to share unrestrained laughter.
The Dead Milkmen were at their apex in the mid-80's. The video above is from 1988. They were inner-city kids who were unpopular, depressed, and completely dejected with a pop-music culture that didn't speak directly to them at all. With no other release, and trapped in a youth-culture that forbade silliness, these kids found each other and were linked by a desire to "run around the playground like idiots". Technical chops and musical skill are far less valuable in this context than cleverness and silliness.
Your incredulousness is hardly a surprise. Part of the deliberate point was to generate bewilderment from people who "didn't get" their arbitrary and shifting punchlines. Suddenly these lost kids were the "insiders" and it was people like you (and 99% of America) who were the outsiders. You played your part masterfully, unwittingly. Nearly 25 years later they still have that effect. Well done, sir!
Don't underestimate the cultural importance of bands like the Dead Milkmen, and their kin in other media, like PeeWee Herman and Ren and Stimpy. Sure they're a joke, but they're also a serious outlet for young people, and the young of heart, who want their pop culture a little less pre-processed and genetically engineered.

As another one of those kids from the 80's who wasn't really understood, I also identify with bands like the Dead Milkmen, who could be REAL.
I'm not saying that Pearl Jam is a bad band, but I'd rather listen to the kids running around like idiots. Unless they're real kids.

Further, if we want to talk about the quality of singing, I don't think that Eddie Vedder would be your poster child. That's not so say that people don't, or even shouldn't, like his singing, but he's about as unintelligible as they come.
For me, music is more about what it brings out in me. Dead Milkmen and their humor punk made me feel that there were other people out there like me. For most fans, when you hear Punk Rock Girl, you hear a certain "openness" in the delivery of the lyrics. He's just kind of an everyman singing the songs.
I certainly don't believe that everyone would like them, but I would guarantee you there are songs that would make you smile that they do. I cannot say the same for Pearl Jam.

While I will be running a few "officially" sanctioned Horror Clown events, I'd like some feedback if there's a particular timeslot you'd like to try and run them on. And of course, you're all but guaranteed to see my clowning around on these new villains during our regular event teams too
